2011 F1 Spanish Grand Prix – Barcelona

After going to watch the F1 Italian Grand Prix in Monza last year, it’s safe to say i’ve caught the bug! You really can’t explain to anyone how the cars sound in real life which why I think it will be a shame when they eventually swap their engines from the current v8 naturally aspirated engines to 4 cylinder turbo engines.

Like in Italy, we decided to combine the visit to the Grand Prix with a holiday break as well so we decided on Barcelona. Not known for being the most exciting race on the calendar, I thought it would make it more interesting actually being there.

So as we did when buying tickets for Monza, plenty of time was spent on the PS3 and on You Tube researching which seats would be best to sit at. We decided on Block H which is right next to the chicane just before the final corner and we weren’t disappointed. From these seats you get to see the cars finishing the back straight and then clearly see 7 corners of the circuit. I don’t think there are many other circuits in the world where you see the cars for so much of the lap!

Getting to the circuit is fairly straight forward as well. We stayed at a hotel in the center of Barcelona and from there we caught the train to Montmeló which takes around 25 minutes and costs us around 7€ for a return ticket for 2 people. From the train station it is then a 20-30minute walk to the circuit.

As for the race, well, the Spanish Grand Prix was unusally a great race!  Alonso made it into the first corner in 1st position but it was only a matter of time before Vettel, Hamilton, Button & Webber past which they did.  Vettel then went onto win the Grand Prix with Hamilton in 2nd place and Button in 3rd.

All in all though, we had a great time there.  The atmosphere of the crowd wasn’t quite that of the crowd in Monza but we both really enjoyed the weekend.  Definitely worth a vistit!
